SUNY Stony Brook: Design of The Reinvention Center
Web Site
Project date: March, 2000 View
the site
The success of the Boyer Commission Report, "Reinventing Undergraduate
Education: A Blueprint for America's Research Universities," had
led to the founding of a new center at SUNY Stony Brook. The essence of
its mission - a fundamental rethinking of the way undergraduate education
is conceived and delivered - was beautifully conveyed through the logo
and literature developed by Milton
Glaser Inc.
My assignment was to create a highly usable site that, through its visual
and textual clarity, would convey the mission and activities of the Center.
The site should easily provide access to a large amount of Web resources,
and it should encourage an exchange of ideas and information among members
of the academic community.
I determined three important ways to achieve these goals:
1 The site opens with a headline and statement that quickly conveys the
purpose and goals of the Center. Time sensitive material and a quick reference
"facts" feature are also highlighted on the main page.
2 Both the site and each screen are structured to quickly communicate
the variety and hierarchy of the information available. The type and imagery
are easy to both download and read.
3 The light, bright colors and the attitude of the printed materials
are carried through, creating a consistent image of the Center.
This job was fast-tracked: designed in two weeks, coded and tested in
two weeks, and launched.
